The concept stemmed from an initial discovery that moving is often traumatic for kids.

Underage drinking, violent outbursts, and suicide rates all rises with the number of times their family has moved.

Our solution is Lumbr, a service that helps families alleviate the emotional stresses of relocating by connecting them with families in their destination that have experienced a similar move.

The problem

Research / Findings


Our initial secondary exploratory research uncovered some stark statistics.

Traumatic moving experiences, especially for kids ages 10 to 14, increase the likelihood of dangerous activities. Including suicide, general violence, and drug abuse

These findings guided our questions towards exploring kids’ experiences with moving because when a child is going through a tough time, so is the whole family.

How Migh We...

The strongest commonality in everyone's move is that at some moment after moving there was a turning point where things started the be ok.

We call it the ok moment.

Though they may define it differently, our focus became:

  • How might we get them to the OK moment faster?


Prototype - Low Fidelity

To get some insights into this question we then developed a low-fidelity prototype to make the Lumbr experience testable.

From our first test, we found out people were a bit confused with our service.

  • They were not sure about who was helping them,

  • Why they were being helped.


The first test also made us realized that in order to help Kids to be OK we have to influence the parents.



Since none of us are parents, after interviewing a few parents, we created the persona Alan.

  • to help us to remain focused on the challenges faced by parents moving with kids.


Prototype - Mid Fidelity

Lumbr works by asking families who got support through the service to volunteer to support other families who are about to begin the moving process.

In earlier prototypes when we asked families if they would do this they said yes with little hesitation.

We suspected this response was unrealistic and created a higher fidelity prototype to help participants more viscerally imagine what supporting another family would be like. Participant families again said yes, but this time with a bit more nuance.

Participation would be dependent on their ability to control communication preferences and clearly set boundaries on the amount of time they would commit.

Service Blueprinting

To facilitate the business aspect of the service, we created a service blueprint, which help us to understand and inform our backed matchmaking process.

The user database and family contact system now ensure the communication preferences of both the moving and supporting families align before identifying them as a potential match.

  • This helps Lumbr families successfully connect and communicate.

  • helps the supporting family feel their time is being respected.

  • facilitates the moving family finding the support they need throughout their moving process.

  • Thus speeding them to that OK moment as fast as possible.

Prototype High Fidelity
